Don advocates for pest regulatory agency

A Professor of Entomology at the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Professor Folorunso Ajayi, has advocated for the establishment of a Pest Regulatory Agency in order to tackle food insecurity in the country.

Ajayi made the called while delivering a lecture titled “Insects, Plants and Humanity: The Organic Agriculture and Stored Products Protection Axis” at the 10th Inaugural lecture of Nasarawa State University, Keffi in Keffi local government area of the state.

He said Food is the most important need of man, while farming is the oldest and noblest profession on earth.

He stressed the need for the federal government to strengthen various agricultural agencies in order to ensure food production as well as tackle poverty in the country.

He  called on the federal government  of Nigeria to urgently  establish a Pest Regulatory Agency or council to monitor and regulate the practices of pest control in Nigeria.

Ajayi said there is the need for the federal government to empower societies such as Entomology Society of Nigeria (ESN) Nigeria Society for Plant Protection (NSPP) and Biotechnology Society of Nigieria (BSN) in order to boost food production in the country.

He advised the federal government to fund  the agricultural sector adequately and help to enact laws that would  govern the indiscriminate use of synthetic pesticides .

According to him, no society can survive comfortably without agriculture, since agriculture is the major source of live hood of every family and nation, hence the need for the advocacy, he added.
