Recently, precisely the  19th of June, the World celebrated World Sickle Cell Day, a  day set aside to identify with people who live with and manage sickle cell disease.

Sickle Cell Disease is an inheritable and  genetic  disease causing red blood cells disorders which has been classified as sickle cell anemia.

Reports say it is the most common public health problem in the African and Asian countries of the world.

It is however very important to note that despite managing this disease, the kind of food you eat will go a long way in helping the management of the sickle cell disease. Here are some food and drinks that can help you to go a long way in being healthy!

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes will provide a greater proportion of the essential nutrients and appropriate supplementation they need for the formation of blood cells.

The list is endless – for meat  you can go for the likes of liver, turkey, pork, lamb, chicken and red lean meat.

Others include egg yolk, canned sardines, all kinds of fish and other seafood like crabs, shrimps, prawns and crayfish.

Eating Beans, dates, raisins and many forms of cashew nuts as well as other nuts are nutritious and very good food idea.

It is advisable to eat more of whole wheat bread, corn, crain – crain [ewedu], okra and vegetable laden soup.

Root vegetables like yam and water yam are very okay too.7. Root vegetables are many – carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes,  yucca root, African yam, cassava and anything from that family  will help to fight sickness  and increase red blood cell production. These vegetables can baked, steamed , juiced or broiled and even fried.

Check out sweet potatoes, tomatoes and  plenty of fruits as well as green vegetables.

  • Eat  plenty of juice and fruits like oranges, carrots, apples, cherries, grapes and tomatoes.
  • Take a lot of pomegranate and dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurts).
  • Drinking  plenty of water  will surely help to eliminate stress.

In Summary

It is advisable for people who live with sickle cell to eat foods rich in iron, calcium and vitamin D.

For those who live in Africa, the sun will help with the vitamin D and once you are able to get enough vitamin D in your system, this will help the bones to fight  pain is in the bones and joints. Not drinking enough water and being dehydrated due to fasting can lead to crisis.

Apart from sticking to recommended medications or injections, it is the best bet to eat good food.

  • Green, leafy vegetables and all kinds of vegetables     Leafy vegetables like Kale, Spinach, Bok Choy and  every vegetable that are high in folate/folic acid are cannot do with outs. This is because these vegetables would aid in improving appetite, cell production, growth and red blood cell formation. More Vegetables are very  important. Because diets high in meats and fatty foods have a tendency  to make sickle cell patients go into crises more, it is very important to eliminate meat from most diet. Instead of eating meat, it is better to relish veggies like cabbage, mustard greens, onions, radishes and the likes of kidney beans, lentils, sorghum and millet.

  • Beet Root:

Image result for BeetsBeets are high in iron, help build the blood and oxygenate the body. They also have an added advantage of detoxify-ing the kidneys, liver and bladder.

This is one of the most energetically balanced food because reports say it strengthens the lungs and the spleen.

it helps to fight  cold and flu and it is a great immune system builder, relieves cramps and helps to expel cold and dampness from the body by increasing  inner body temperature.

Cayenne is another great detoxifier. It strengthens your immune system, disperses congestion, clears sinuses, expels cold and helps to calm abdominal pains (by dilating the veins/arteries in the abdomen, increasing circulation, thereby increasing oxygenation.
