The commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in Akwa Ibom State, Dr Offiong Offor, has declared that Nigerians must return to farming to reduce food insecurity in the country.
Offor made the declaration shortly after receiving an award of excellence from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike.
She asserted that agriculture has been an age-long profession, adding that the practice must continue for individuals and households to achieve sustainable development in Nigeria.
As the award recipient, she lauded the University for its giant strides in ensuring that food security is achieved in the country through research.
The commissioner commended the Vice Chancellor Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, and the university management for counting her worthy of the award.
Her words, “I feel very humble about this recognition and I thank the university management and the Vice Chancellor, the committee that organised this event for recognising the little things that we are doing in society. I’m thankful to them all. I’m also thankful to the governor of my state for the privilege to serve in the state executive committee.’
